I have a non-traditional career path for a compliance officer at an investment bank, and it illustrates that the firm thinks expansively about talent. I spent part of my high school years in Japan and was a Political Science major. I started my professional career as a corporate associate at a law firm and worked in their New York and Frankfurt offices. After the law firm, I was an attorney at a media company and, most recently, at a pharmaceutical company. When I heard the firm was having a recruiting event, “Careers for Attorneys at Goldman Sachs,” I attended the event with no expectation that anything would come of it. I was, however, very impressed by what I learned about the culture of the firm and Global Compliance. Imagine my surprise when I received the call to come in for an interview.
My first few days at the firm were filled with lots of acronyms and new people – it was intense. On my third day of work, I was asked for my opinion on a training-related matter and what my strategy on training was going to be. It was just around the time I was starting to learn my new phone number. It was then that I knew that the firm really values ideas and that I would have the opportunity to make an impact – the start bell had been rung and I was off.
