I came to Goldman Sachs through campus recruiting for a summer internship. I had interviewed with about 12 firms for the summer, for both investment banking and research jobs. I realized that I was much more interested in research and worked that summer covering stocks in the Technology sector. At the end of the summer, I interviewed for full-time and was placed on the Strategy team. I spent my first four years in the US and then transferred to London, also working for the strategy team.
I remember being a bit overwhelmed during my first few days at the firm. They had us start right at the beginning of the summer earnings season – a really tough time to begin work as it is so busy. As you’re there for just a few weeks at that point, it’s really hard to contribute, and you just watch everything going on around you. I also remember how surprised I was to find working that many hours enjoyable. At school, I could never study more than three hours consecutively, yet at work I was able to work 12-hour-plus days, no problem.
