I work in the Operations division in our London office, managing a team that works on the documentation surrounding structured equity derivative over-the-counter transactions. My responsibilities currently involve building and strengthening the team, which has grown significantly in the past year, as well as reviewing structured confirmations, allocating work and focussing on resolving high risk issues, and working to improve the processes.

Team work is essential. For example, if one analyst discovers a discrepancy when speaking to the client to confirm economic details, this information is escalated and resolved with the relevant trading desk. It also needs to be shared with the analysts who are drafting the legal documentation to make sure it doesn’t go to the next stage.

In the past year, I was given responsibility for a team. While I had technical understanding, I had no management experience. As a result, I had to work very hard to develop people and process management skills, but I have also been coached and mentored by experts in my area. This is a place where there are many opportunities, but it takes hard work and honest conversations for these opportunities to become realities.
