I had always planned on working in the field of economic development in poorer countries, but I felt a career in finance where I could build on my economics background, learn about managing process and build strong organisation and communication skills would help me in the long term. I never expected to be working at Goldman Sachs, particularly because I did not feel this would be the type of organisation where someone from my demographic would fit in. I was soon proven very wrong!
Anyone considering this field should research the various roles offered in such institutions and how they fit into your skill set and personality type. Not everyone is designed to be a trader or an investment banker, and most roles in Goldman Sachs are not trading or investment banker roles. I would also suggest getting in touch with your careers fair to see what is on offer. Meeting real people at the company to which you are thinking of applying will give you a much greater understanding of the firm, its culture and their role in it and will help you in your application and interview.
