I would not have believed it if somebody had told me I would be spending the first four years of my career in real estate finance. I knew I wanted to join a bulge-bracket investment bank but was very wary of specialising early on. Obviously this fear has been alleviated at Goldman Sachs and I don’t think I could have found a better team. I feel like there is more than enough diversity in my work to keep me interested for a while. It sounds cliché, but no day is similar to the next.
I didn’t quite expect to be at Goldman Sachs right after business school, but I think as a student it is quite difficult to assess yourself and whether or not you are a good fit for a particular firm. My advice is just to give it a go! Try to join the best firm in the field that you are interested in. Then, have a candid approach to work – be diligent as you would be with anything else in life. Apply yourself and then reflect upon whether you are enjoying your job and what you do day-to-day. Chances are that if you like what you are doing, people will know it and see it in your work product.
Keep the big picture in mind and see where your motivations take you. Most importantly, always make the most of the opportunities you are presented with!
