The Goldman Sachs Center for Environmental Markets works with independent partners in the academic and non-government organization communities to examine market-based solutions to environmental challenges. The Center disseminates the findings of its research through a combination of publications, conferences and targeted outreach to engage and educate clients, investors and policymakers. Selected projects that the Center is currently working on include:
The Prince’s Rainforests Project
The Center is a Steering Committee member of The Prince’s Rainforests Project, which was launched by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. The project seeks to identify and develop a range of practical mechanisms to value the world’s rainforests and provide incentives and encourage commitment by necessary parties to reduce tropical deforestation. Reducing deforestation is likely to be one of the quickest and most cost effective means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This project brings together private sector, government and environmental experts to develop practical solutions to reduce deforestation and raise global awareness of the true value of tropical rainforests.
Resources for the Future
The Center has partnered with Resources for the Future’s Climate and Technology Policy Program to advance intellectually credible and politically sensible approaches to dealing with climate change. The U.S. Climate Policy Forum brought together 23 companies from across the spectrum of the U.S. economy to inform RFF’s research in this area, with the objective of providing legislators with well-vetted policy options and criteria for assessment of different proposals.

Woods Hole Research Center
As part of a commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative, the Center has partnered with the Woods Hole Research Center on a three-year project to examine how to value forest ecosystem resources and services and analyze economic alternatives to rainforest destruction.
World Resources Institute
The Center has partnered with the World Resources Institute to analyze the viability of large-scale deployment of various technology options, including clean coal and carbon capture and sequestration technologies and biofuels, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and diversify the world's energy sources. In a series of papers, the project will assess the policy, technical and market barriers to deployment and scale-up of each technology.
