Alternative Energy: Global Public Policy & Regulatory Challenges

Research Report: Alternative Energy: A Global Survey  [PDF, 1.5 MB]

At the request of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, this multilateral, one-day conference was held in Washington, D.C. on October 19, 2007. Hosted by the Global Markets Institute at Goldman Sachs and Center for Environmental Markets, the event convened leading public policy officials, business leaders and investors to discuss the challenges to scaling up domestic alternative energy production and use. The two panel discussions addressed:

Best Practices in Incentives & Regulation Outside of the U.S.:

  • What role should incentives, subsidies and regulation play in catalyzing the development of the alternative energy industry?
  • What can the U.S. learn from experience of the international community in incentivizing domestic alternative energy production and usage?

Investment in & the Potential for Industry Growth:

  • What is the state of the market for alternative energy from the point of view of industry CEOs and investors?
  • What is the most productive investment space for alternative energy technology? Which technology presents the most sustainable form of alternative energy going forward?
  • With present conditions in credit markets and as energy companies come to market, will there will concerns regarding their ability to obtain financing?

In addition, the symposium was concluded with a presentation on Brazil, Russia, India & China: Challenges to Growth in a Changing World .
